Aga Baranska’s Fashion Paintings
Based between London and Berlin, Aga Baranska recently stole my attention with her use of chunky, textured paint patterns, elements of collage, and a healthy fashion editorial sensibility. Her paintings are full of vibrancy and color but also maintain a contemporary-chic edge with their mixture of mediums and lively design. As a lover and reviewer of all contemporary art, fashion art is definitely one of my new “fun-favorites” to discuss and Aga Baransky was just the refreshing pop of originality I needed to challenge my eyes and fashion sense.

“Dali Darling” - Paris Vogue
he Vogue Paris March 2011 spread starring Arizona Muse and Missy Rayder is a striking, surreal editorial for the French issue titled ‘Dali Darling’ and lensed by Mikael Jansson.
Photographer Jansson was inspired by the famous surreal painter Salvador Dali, who was known for his bold and bizarre images. The influence can be felt throughout the pages with the styling of quirky makeup and realistic mannequin props. Actually, the spread is so eccentric, as the master painter himself once was, I wouldn’t be surprised if the fake dolls were actually real models.
Either way, famed surrealist artist Salvador Dali lives on in the Vogue Paris March 2011 spread. I’m sure he would have been proud of this piece of art.

Ben Hassett for Vogue Russia - Beauty Editorial
This Ben Hassett for Vogue Russia editorial explores the collage medium to create dynamic beauty imagery.
Reconstructing conventions of symmetry, the seemingly disembodied visages that compose this piece push boundaries in terms of perception of cosmetic composition. The surreal inspiration of this piece is evident in the chaos of the rearranged facial components. As beauty editorials usually depict models sporting various cosmetic looks, the modern art take of this feature in Vogue Russia boasts and avant-garde allure.
Model Codie Young provides the perfect canvas for this spread with her striking features made-up in bold and theatrical maquillage. This tumultuous take on the visage challenges viewers to examine modern notions of beauty. This piece by Ben Hassett is exemplary in its utilization of the collage medium to create a fascinating take on fall beauty.

Erotica: Haute Couture - A TRIBUTE TO ALEXANDER MCQUEEN
Shot by Steven Klein, the spread features Lily Donaldson and is styled by none other than the Editrix herself, Carine Roitfeld. The shoot, titled Erotica, is a tribute to the late Alexander McQueen, and also features fashion from the Fall 2010 Haute Couture shows.
The dual dream of LiliRoze.
To wake up in the decadent salons of an enchanted house, amid the remains of a fancy dress ball and the dressing gowns of ghostly women. It seems to be a dream, but in fact it’s LiliRoze’s photo shoot for the couturier Maurizio Galante.
“I don’t photograph what I see, but what I feel”, this is the sentence LiliRoze utters as if emerging from a dream, like a poet-reporter from a secret palace, concealed beneath a desert oasis or a cliffside cave.
And accompanied by portraits with a vague profile, hallucinated visions of women immersed in the atmosphere of a era which is sumptuous yet in decline and traces of faded dreams.
They are revelations crushed between the fleeting unconscious and the shadow of deep, fragile secrets. Where grace and intimacy are captured in the moment that they meet, in a gesture suspended in time.
Born in Geneva in 1972, passionate about photography from a very young age, after discovering her father’s shots, LiliRoze graduated from ENS Louis Lumière in 1997 and has worked alongside famous photographers ever since.
In 2006, she won the Leica Prize of Les Indèpendances and best photo of the year in 2010 in the “Fashion and Beauty” category instituted by the APPPF (Agency for the promotion of professional photography in France). LiliRoze is now a freelance photographer busy with her personal research.
